In 1748 Benjamin Franklin was able to create an array of charged glass plates, which he gave the term "battery" to. Since then technology and science has advanced to create what we now today call a battery. Different types of chemicals, both wet and dry, have been experimented with to create electricity. The first wet batteries were created by Alessandro Volta in 1800, but the first dry battery didn't come around till the mid 1800's. The first commercially successful dry-cell battery wasen't created untill the late 1800's. As the design and chemical composition of the battery changed, new ideas came to be. The first nickel-cadmium rechargable battery was created by Waldmar Jungner in 1899, and also in 1954 Gerald Pearson invented the first solar battery. Today trillions of batteries based on the early designs are being used in popular devices all around the world.
Batteries are commonly a device in which a chemical reaction is converted into electrical energy. The amount of electricity produced is dependant on what chemicals are used. The size of the battery also determins how much energy can be sustained for what period of time. Batteries are mainly used for portable devices such as cd players, Ipods, flashlights, PDA's, Cell Phones, portable game consoles, or basically any device that requires power where power is not readily available, allowing for portability of the device anywhere in the world. Some batteries can be recharged by supplying energy back to the battery cell, restoring their original chemical composition. Whenever you need to power a device and there is not a ready supply of electricity, or portability is required, batteries come in handy.
