The location for Seattle was chosen by Arthur Denny because it was the dryest spot around. Out of fifteen hundred acres of mud flats eight of them were partially dry land. The land was surrounded 200 foot high cliffs and were wet all winter, and sometimes in July and August. Although throughout the years the land was developed, the major fire on June 6, 1889 caused the decision to rebuild the city two stories higher than the original street grade. Downtown Seattle was enclosed with brick and wood baracades and the pavements were raised. Because of this some of the sidewalks and storefronts were as much as three feet below street level. Pedestrians had to climb ladders to go between street level and building entrances. Eventually the building entrances were raised and sidewalks covered over, creating what they now call The Seattle Underground.
In 1965 Bill Speidel thought there might be interest and a way to make money by taking paying customers on a tour of what was left underneath downtown Seattle. He would take people on tours and tell them of tall tales
of Seattle's history. In 2004 the tours included an adult-only version of the tour that included history of prostitution, opium dens, and other less family friendly history of Seattle. Over the years the underground
structures have been rebuilt to be more visually appealing to tourists. There is even a museum that contains exhibits on Seattle's Victorian era and more, which is included in the ticket price for the tour.
